How Speakia Builds Confident Young English Speakers

Sep 02, 2025

As many families and schools begin a new school year, we’ve been receiving questions about the Speakia approach to language learning. This post provides an overview of our curriculum design and answers some of the most common queries from parents and teachers.

A Structured Path from First Words to Confident Conversation

The Speakia curriculum is carefully sequenced across four progressive levels, designed to support young English learners step by step:

- Levels 1–2 (Pre-A1 CEFR): building foundational vocabulary, simple sentences, and early speaking confidence.

- Levels 3–4 (A1 CEFR): moving into more complex sentences, interactive dialogues, and real-world communication skills.

Each level includes:

- 12 Adventures on familiar topics such as My Family, Trip to the Zoo, or At the Restaurant.

- 6 Missions per Adventure—that’s 72 missions per level, providing nearly 100 hours of classroom-ready content.

This structure ensures that learners are not just memorizing words, but progressively developing the capacity to hold real conversations.

The Speakia Learning Flow

Every mission follows the same natural progression: Vocabulary → Sentences → Dialogue

  1. Vocabulary: Students first learn key words connected to the adventure theme.
  2. Sentences: These words are combined into simple but useful sentences.
  3. Dialogue: Learners then use these sentences in interactive, spoken conversations.

This gradual build helps children move smoothly from single words to full sentences, and then into creative, real communication. Each mission also builds on what came before, so children are constantly recycling and extending their skills.

Building Strong Pronunciation and Speaking Habits

Before children move into freer conversations, Speakia helps them establish clear and confident pronunciation.

Using an AI-powered pronunciation engine, the app provides feedback on three key areas:

  •  Pronunciation – clarity and sound accuracy
  •  Accuracy – correct use of target words and sentences
  •  Fluency – smooth, natural delivery at the learner’s level

Each response is scored, giving learners instant feedback and guiding them to improve step by step. The system is designed to encourage careful, accurate speech from the start, helping students build strong speaking habits.

This solid foundation prepares learners for the freer practice in the Explore section, where the focus shifts from accuracy to confidence and independence.

The Role of Explore: Building Fluency, Not Perfection

One of the most frequent questions we get is: “What’s the purpose of the Explore section in the app?”

The Explore area is deliberately different from the scaffolded Learn missions. Here, children are asked to take responsibility for their part in the conversation:

  •  They receive only minimal vocabulary hints.
  •  They must understand what they hear and respond independently.
  •  They are free to give many possible answers—there is no single “correct” sentence.
  •  Progression depends on trying and participating, not on producing perfect grammar or pronunciation.

Recycling Across the Curriculum

Explore dialogues are not limited to the most recent mission. They can draw on any vocabulary or sentence structure from previous levels and adventures, giving learners natural opportunities to revisit and consolidate earlier material. This ensures:

  •  Long-term retention through meaningful recycling.
  •  Flexibility in drawing from the learner’s whole language bank.
  •  A more authentic experience of conversation, where past learning is continually brought back into use.

A Different Approach to Scoring

Because Explore is about fluency and independence, the scoring system is different:

  •  Learners are not given numerical scores for pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy.
  •  Instead, they receive a star reward for making an attempt.
  •  To progress, students simply need to produce an utterance (two or more words)—not a perfect sentence.

This approach lowers pressure, rewards risk-taking, and keeps the focus on confidence and communication, not perfection.

Beyond Missions: Rich, Multi-Modal Learning

The Explore area also offers additional experiences that enrich children’s learning and make English part of their imaginative world:

- Cinema: Animated stories that entertain while providing natural exposure to English.

- Karaoke Centre: Original songs that reinforce rhythm, pronunciation, and memory.

- Learning Center: Short video lessons with communication tips and strategies.

These features support different learning styles and encourage independent exploration, while still reinforcing core skills.

Classroom Resources: Extending Learning Beyond the App

Alongside the app, Speakia offers a complete classroom program:

- Mission-based lessons and resources aligned directly to the app content.

- Speakia Stories package, designed to consolidate each adventure through storytelling.

The Stories package includes:

- Activities that review adventure language while teaching storytelling.

- Oral story practice focusing on character, setting, problem, and resolution.

- Creative challenges where children tell their own stories using the language they’ve learned.

These lessons link back to the world and characters children encounter in the app, making language learning cohesive, meaningful, and fun.

Why This Approach Works

By combining structured missions with freer exploration, songs, stories, and classroom resources, Speakia creates a balanced environment for young English learners.

Children are:

- Guided step by step from vocabulary to conversation.

- Given safe opportunities to experiment and speak freely.

- Supported in both classroom and independent learning.

- Connected to a world of characters and narratives that make learning memorable.

The result is learners who don’t just know English—they can use it confidently and creatively.
